SurvTech Solutions Leverages SPiDER Manhole Scanner for Manhole Inspections to Enhance Service Quality

Updated: Aug 19

SurvTech Solutions is thrilled to announce the addition of CUES’ SPiDER scanner to our comprehensive suite of advanced surveying and inspection services. This cutting-edge technology allows us to elevate our manhole inspection capabilities, ensuring our clients receive the most accurate and efficient assessments available.

The SPiDER scanner, developed by CUES — a leader in CCTV pipeline inspection equipment — offers remarkable innovations in manhole scanning technology. It auto-detects manhole shapes, materials, and dimensions with an accuracy within a fraction of an inch, thanks to its dense point cloud.

According to Pierre Mikhail, Director of the CUES Manhole Inspection Division, "The SPiDER scanner provides a new outlook on how manhole data is collected and applied."

Scanner Applications

Here’s how SurvTech Solutions plans to utilize the SPiDER scanner to enhance our services. The SPiDER scanner's dense point cloud and high accuracy enable us to gather detailed and reliable data about manhole structures.

This precision is critical for structural assessments, pre- and post-rehabilitation analysis, and hydrological surveys. The data collected will help us provide our clients with thorough and accurate reports, ensuring they have the information needed to make informed decisions about infrastructure maintenance and upgrades.

Accurate and Efficient Manhole Inspections

The SPiDER scanner's wireless, lightweight design makes it incredibly efficient to deploy and use. Unlike traditional manhole inspection cameras, the SPiDER does not require a payout reel or extensive cabling. This eliminates the common issues associated with cable counters and poorly managed cables, which can be costly and time-consuming to repair.

With no need for a truck or data/power cable, the SPiDER allows us to conduct inspections more swiftly and with less equipment, resulting in reduced operational costs and quicker turnaround times for our clients.

The SPiDER’s ability to be deployed using a telescopic mast or tripod, combined with its lightweight, 40-pound design, means we can easily adapt to different field conditions. Whether we are inspecting a standard manhole or more complex structures like electrical chambers, lift stations, or water wells, the SPiDER's flexibility ensures we can meet a wide range of client needs. This versatility is further enhanced by the SPiDER's capability to scan structures up to 15 feet wide and 100 feet deep at a rate of 7 feet per minute.

The SPiDER scanner collects millions of 3D points during each scan, providing engineering and survey-quality information about manhole geometry and condition. This data can be used to generate 3D textured point cloud renderings, which can be imported into various 3D viewers and delivered in multiple formats, including 3D MPEG point cloud, CAD model, and virtual model files.

This comprehensive data collection ensures our clients receive detailed and actionable insights. Additionally, the SPiDER scanner’s 190-degree field-of-view live video stream is an invaluable tool for inflow and infiltration studies. This live video capability helps us detect moving water and other issues in real-time, allowing for prompt and effective intervention.

By integrating the SPiDER scanner into our operations, SurvTech Solutions reaffirms its commitment to leveraging the latest technological advancements to provide superior service. This innovative tool enhances our ability to deliver precise, efficient, and comprehensive manhole inspections, ensuring our clients receive the best possible support for their infrastructure projects.
